Samakal Correspondent
The next budget will be the greatest budget of all time in the country's history, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said.

Education, health and power would be given most priority in the next budget, he said in pre-budget discussions with newspaper editors, publishers and electronic media executives on Thursday.

The new VAT law will be implemented from July 1 and the rate of it will also be reduced, he said in the discussions held at the conference room of the finance ministry.

At the discussion editors and publishers of the national dailies recommended to reduce newsprint duty, increase advertisement rates, bring discipline in the banking sector, encourage export and seek more allocation for ensuring quality education.

Editor of the daily Samakal Golam Sarwar urged the minister to cut import duties on newsprint as it is very high that put pressure on the production cost of the newspaper. He also recommended withdrawal of 15 percent VAT and 5 percent advance income tax on the newsprint.

In response, the Finance Minister assured that the proposal would be considered actively.

Publisher of the daily Samakal and former FBCCI president AK Azad said that the new law of bank company act will bring irregularities in this sector and demanded a review on it.

The daily Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, the Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, the News Today Editor Riazuddin Ahmed, the Amader Orthoneeti Nayeemul Islam Khan and the Daily Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutt, among others, were present at the discussion.
