Five days after the fatal landslide, bodies of two more victims have been recovered in Rangamati, raising the death toll to 154.

Rangamati Executive Magistrate Khandaker Md Ikhtiyar Uddin Arafat told media that two bodies were recovered from Jurachhari upazila on Saturday morning.

The victims were identified as Tiyong Chakma, 17, and Chigechotha Chakma, 17.

Meanwhile, a total of 152 bodies were recovered in Chittagong, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Cox’s Bazar districts till yesterday.

Among the 154 deaths in the hills, 112 in Rangamati, 29 in Chittagong, seven in Bandarban, two in Cox’s Bazar and one in Khagrachhari. Among the dead are five army men.

According to Rangamati Deputy Commisioner (DC) Manzurul Mannan, they will distribute Tk 20,000 and 20kg of rice to the families of the deceased. The hill district's administration will also provide the families with Tk 20,000.

The incessant rains caused a water logging in a vast part of the port city and submerged a number of coastal villages apart from triggering the landslides.

Experts and environmentalists attributed the latest spell of landslides to illegal hill cuts exposing the sandy hills to quick erosion during protracted rains.

The three southeastern hill districts of Ragamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari of Chittagong Hill Tracts saw over 300mm of rainfalls in the 24 hours till Tuesday morning.
