Drug Act is being amended with tougher actions: Nasim

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim today said the existing drug act is being amended keeping some provisions of harsher punishments and major penalties to discourage all sorts of irregularities in this sector.

"The existing law (Drug Act) is being amended to prevent all sorts of irregularities and corruption in importing, exporting, manufacturing, distributing and the sale of drugs," the minister said this while responding to a tabled question of treasury bench member M Abdul Latif in the House today with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

He said the proposed amendment to the drug act is waiting for the approval of the law ministry, BSS reports.

The minister said, drive against the counterfeit, date-expired and unregistered drugs is a continuous process and the authorities concerned are ensuing proper punishments to the offenders in this regard.

"Each district's action committee is also working with the assignment to curb all sorts of irregularities in this sector," he added.

Nasim said the government has in the meantime gave approval of some 175 pharmacies as model ones across the country as part of preventing the sale of fake, unauthorized and substandard medicines.
