Banani rape indictment hearing July 9

A Dhaka court has accepted charges filed against five accused in Banani twin rape case and set July 9 for indictment hearing.

Judge Md Shafiul Azam of the Second Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression set the date on Monday.

The accused are: prime accused Ahmed Shafat, son of the owner of Apan Jewellers, his friend Nayem Ashraf, one Shadman Sakif, Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain, and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.

The court also rejected the bail petitions of the five accused.

On the night of March 28, two university students were reportedly raped in the Raintree hotel in Dhaka's Banani area by Ahmed Shafat, son of the owner of Apan Jewellers, and his cohorts.  

One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 accusing five people. Of the accused, Ahmed Shafat and Nayeem Ashraf were sued for raping the two female university students while Shadman Sakif, Shafat's driver Billal, and his bodyguard Rahmat Ali for abetting in the crime.

All of the accused, including Ahmed Shafat – son of the Apan Jewellers owner Dildar Ahmed – have been arrested.
